The success of Squid Game on Netflix proved that audiences around the globe are willing to watch original programming on the streamer that wasn’t exclusively American produced and in English, even viewers in the United States proved interested in foreign content. Luckily for Netflix it wasn’t long before their next big South Korean original series arrived on the scene as their all-new horror show Hellbound has arrived. The new series, which hails from Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho and their writing partner Choi Gyu-seok, has already shown that it will be a hit as the series has a perfect, 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is already dominating the Top 10 on the streaming service.
As if this writing Hellbound is the #3 TV series in the United States sitting behind only the live-action Cowboy Bebop series and the new season of Tiger King on the television charts. Overall on Netflix it’s the #4 piece of content with the Netflix original feature film Red Notice sitting at #1. With twelve reviews submitted to Rotten Tomatoes the series has a perfect critical score as well, a rare feat for any TV series in this day and age. The critical consensus reads: “Summoned by the devilish imagination of writer-director Yeon Sang-ho, Hellbound leverages its terrifying concept to thoughtfully explore human fallibility.”
Coming off the successful Train to Busan sequel film Peninsula, Yeon Sang-ho adapts his acclaimed webtoon series into the new Netflix show, revealing in the press kit for the series: “I wanted to tell the story of Hellbound in the more prolonged series format rather than as a film….It is fascinating to watch artists of our time craft and perfect the narrative of each character. All I had to do was convey to the viewers what I felt watching the actors perform.”
Netflix’s full description for the series can be found below. You can stream all six episodes of Hellbound on the service right now!
Unbelievable demonstrations of hell take place in the middle of Seoul right in front of crowds. Mysterious beings condemn individuals to be hellbound, and otherworldly beings appear exactly at the specified time to kill the condemned in a brutal burning. Rising above the utter chaos resulting from these inexplicable supernatural occurrences is the commanding voice of Jung Jinsu, the leader of an up-and-coming religious organization, The New Truth. He claims that only sinners are marked for condemnation and that these occurrences represent divine will to make humans righteous. A group of his followers with blind faith, the Arrowhead, take into their own hands the punishment of those who go against the divine will. The world becomes a living hell.
Min Hyejin, a lawyer, challenges Chairman Jung by claiming the demonstrations of hell to be simply supernatural occurrences. She joins forces with the few who try to protect the hellbound and return the world to the realm of humans, not gods. They go up against the chaos instigated by The New Truth….Then one day, an infant born two days ago is condemned, making it difficult to believe the divine will that only sinners become hellbound
